Every rare flower deserves to bloom.

We support research on rare genetic mutations on the IL1RAPL2 gene and we stand by the families.

About Us

The Fiori Rari Philanthropic Fund was born from the desire of Antonio Guida and Luciana Lombardi to promote and accelerate scientific research on rare genetic mutations that cause neurocognitive delay and associated disabilities.

In 2020, with the diagnosis of Viola, who was identified with a missense mutation in the IL1RAPL2 gene, a complex journey began for the family, filled with unanswered questions and uncertainties. As often happens for families receiving a rare genetic diagnosis, the initial feeling is one of being alone in facing a little-known and little-studied reality.

From this personal experience comes the will to transform difficulty into concrete action. Today, the Fund stands by families with the goal of supporting research, building a support network, and fostering greater scientific and clinical knowledge of these conditions.

Rare and often highly disabling, neurocognitive disorders of genetic origin involve the entire family unit. For this reason, the Fiori Rari Fund operates guided by the values of urgency, integrity, collaboration, and inclusion, with the conviction that only through research and shared work is it possible to concretely improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

From hope to action

The Fiori Rari Philanthropic Fund is actively engaged in two main areas, both fundamental to improving the quality of life of people affected by rare genetic mutations.

Research

We support the work of Prof. Stefano Berto at the Medical University of South Carolina and of Dr. Chiara Verpelli at the Institute of Neuroscience of the National Research Council (CNR). Research focuses on mutations of the IL1RAPL2 gene, using cellular models and advanced techniques to develop new therapeutic strategies.

Support

We support associations operating in the field of early intervention. These organizations play an essential role in accompanying children in their first years of life and providing concrete support to families.

The goal is to create a bridge between scientific research and the real needs of families, with the conviction that only by combining knowledge, collaboration, and concrete support is it possible to generate a lasting impact.

A casa di Antonio

Through the fundraising initiative "A casa di Antonio", we open the doors of our dining room to offer a unique and intimate culinary experience, reserved for a maximum of 12 guests. During these meetings, guests have the opportunity to witness closely the work of chef Antonio Guida and his team, and to taste, in an authentic and convivial atmosphere, a selection of dishes from the menu of the Seta restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, two Michelin stars. It is possible, both privately and at a corporate level, to support the Fiori Rari Fund with a donation to reserve one or more seats at the table, conceived precisely to combine gastronomic excellence and social commitment.

Started in 2019 in collaboration with the association L'abilità Onlus, the initiative has given life to 25 events in six years, welcoming over 300 people and transforming the conviviality of the table into a concrete instrument of solidarity.

Today, with the birth of the Fiori Rari Philanthropic Fund, we add to our goals that of directly supporting the scientific research of Dr. Stefano Berto, engaged in the study of rare genetic neurodevelopmental diseases, with a specific focus on the haploinsufficiency of the IL1RAPL2 gene.

"A casa di Antonio" thus continues in 2026 as a project capable of transforming a private initiative into a public goal, attributing a broader value to the Sunday lunch: doing good by supporting research and the future of many families.

Research Projects

The Fiori Rari Fund supports two scientific laboratories engaged in the study of IL1RAPL2 gene mutations and the associated neurodevelopmental disorders.

Prof. Stefano Berto
Prof. Stefano Berto

Medical University of South Carolina

Synapses, cortical circuits and ASO therapy

Prof. Berto's work on IL1RAPL2 gene mutations uses next-generation human and mouse cellular models. The project aims to understand how IL1RAPL2 loss alters synaptic development and cortical circuits, and to develop a therapeutic strategy based on antisense oligonucleotides (ASO).

Dr. Chiara Verpelli
Dr. Chiara Verpelli

Institute of Neuroscience, National Research Council (CNR)

Deciphering the synaptic role of IL1RAPL2 in human neurons carrying the c.1870G>A (p.E624K) mutation

Dr. Verpelli's laboratory is launching a new project to determine whether the IL1RAPL2 p.E624K mutation alters synaptic development and neuronal function, using human neurons derived from the patient.
